Washington October 15 1941 The House foreign affairs committee backs a repeal of the neutrality act ban on arming merchant ships with guns and crews The House rules committee grants time for debate and leaders expect passage by Friday The measure would allow armed ships to confront submarines aircraft and surface threats while restricting amendments to the specific repeal
The Tatita Maru sailed from Yokohama for the United States with five Americans and 300 American born Japanese aboard. About 250 are expected to disembark in Honolulu. The ship was the first Japanese vessel to sail for the U S since late July and will be followed by two more bound for America.
Seven registrants from the Union City draft district including four from Corry will leave on October 22 for induction into the U S Army for a year of training Local Board No 3 announced. The original plan called for thirteen but the pool of eligible examinees is exhausted. Five registrants were also called for examination at Erie on October 22 and their names were released at the Union City board’s headquarters.
Former state motor patrolman James E. Elmer of Union City dies in a head on collision on the Freeport road near Aspinwall after leaving his post at Union City. Mrs Anna Fisher of Saxonburg also dies, and daughter Mrs Nettie Fisher Cooper, 24, is seriously hurt. Cooper is bride of Reldon Cooper of Saxonburg. Elmer’s wife Meredith Kunkel survives.
Mrs Meanor Herron of Hateror Pennsylvania says her husband William Herron 97 is five days overdue from a flight from Canada to Britain in a British bomber. Canadian authorities informed her he left the local airport to manage bomber deliveries to Britain.
Rep. Patman of Texas urged immediate House action on price control legislation. As a member of the Senate Bank and Currency Committee, he has pressed for progress after hearings since July and will push for an executive session to advance a bill.
At the Pittsfield grade crossing a crash claimed the lives of Catherine Teconchuk and her brother-in-law Julius Flow guiding rescue and hospital care for the third victim Mrs Ann Flow and her two and a half year old son Julius flow both injured. Mrs Flow lost her husband and sister in the incident. Catherine Teconehik’s parents and siblings are listed among survivors. Julius Flow is in critical condition with head and chest injuries while Mrs Flow remains serious.
Mrs. Ray Greene president of the Corry Hosnits Auxiliary announced Hospital Donation Day is progressing satisfactorily with forty seven active members canvassing houses and businesses. Severe weather may push activities into next week but completion is hoped by October 28. The drive covers Spartansburg Spring Creek and Columbus with Mrs. Glenn Donaldson and Mrs. Gerald Pauliner leading their districts. Pope Pius XII appointed Nicolo Cardinal Canali grand penitentiary to succeed the late Lorenzo Cardinal Lauri who heads the penitentiaria apostolica and administers absolution and penalties for clergy and laity.
State police investigate a night theft at Corry Public Library and the adjacent school office. An old revolver, about $23 in cash, and assorted drawers contents were stolen after a rear window and boiler room door were forced open. Authorities consider possible links to two earlier safe cracking in Youngsville while amateurs remain suspected.
Pittsburgh, Oct. 15 After 26 years a Pittsburgh man was freed when the case against him in a 1915 Black Hand slaying was quashed for want of credible witnesses. A nolle prosse motion was granted by Judge Horatio S. Dumbauld after witnesses died or were found mentally incompetent. The man, whose identity was kept secret, had confessed six months earlier to District Attorney H Tahoe Cattom that he was the gunman in the Belle Vernon murder of Pete Munelso on May 1, 1915, a crime he said he committed out of conscience.
The high command reported that a German submarine in the Strait of Gibraltar sunk a British destroyer yesterday. The destroyer was not identified.
Avanciated Press reports General George Marshall told a Senate sub committee that German armies are suffering a tremendous material loss on the Moscow drive. He avoided forecasts on the war’s outcome while noting evidence that German equipment is being used up quickly, and discussed the Lend-Lease program and Soviet aid amid the Moscow conference.

The dispute threatened about seventy percent of Army fanle production as hotel workers in Pittsburgh faced an 11 day stoppage. Bartenders rejected a peace proposal and voting by 1,600 service workers was postponed pending a masling tonight.
London October 15 Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told the House of Commons there was no detailed agreement or proposal with Japan regarding the United States and no agreement on the status of the Philippine Islands Singapore Australia and the Netherlands West Indies. He noted exploratory talks and said no definitive accord had been reached.
SARY Ind Oct 16 A CIO union drive at Carnegie-Illinois Steel Gary works prompts picket lines to deter workers from entering without a union card. Pickets halted all entry at gates as organizers press for carded membership while some employees gain access.
Boston October 15 United States detained the eight women crew aboard the Norwegian vessel Busko described as a supply ship for a Nazi radio station in Greenland. They were brought ashore under escort of a U S naval vessel and charged with entering the United States without proper documents. Deportation was the expected penalty, though transportation home seemed unlikely.
Manila Oct 1 four army airmen were killed when their medium bomber crashed at Clark Field Pampanga during antiaircraft practice. Second Lieutenant Rexford Nie Kinsley from Evanston Ill piloted the plane after a searchlight blinded him. Other victims included Privates Robert Fenkhouser Des Plaines Illinois Clarence A Drapich Eureka Illinois and Francis Brouillette Newinnville Massachusetts.
Philadelphia and Clearfield items report the Office of Production Management asking the War Department to place orders for small metal parts for the Talon Company Meadville Pa to resume full production. The plant previously curtailed due to material shortages and furloughed many workers. In Clearfield Pa a 59-year-old miller, Steve Kulzler, killed himself with dynamite after a family crisis, according to coroner notes.

Fire of unknown origin destroyed the barn on the Oak Wood farm near Baker Hall northwest of Split Creek last night.
