De Gaulle orders the French army to withdraw from politics in Algeria as he seeks fair elections. He bans military candidates, vows equal access for all factions, and aims to curb extremism ahead of next month’s parliamentary vote.
At Rankin High School a pupil strike drew 88 junior members from class as parents protested. They cited heavy homework by history teacher Thomas A. Rogers, absence of driver training and a student council. Superintendent Maurice Silverstein condemned mob rule and scheduled another meeting with Rogers.

A fast moving gunman staged two stickups in the Erie area last night. He robbed a motorist on Liberty Street for $70 after pulling a nickel plated revolver and fled toward Erie. Moments later he entered the Route 8 cafe as a patron and ordered a beer, before vanishing in the night. Police broadcast a description nationwide as they pursue the suspect.

A wildcat strike at London Airport spread to about 4,000 engineers and maintenance workers of British Overseas Airways Corp halting air services to many parts of the world.
A crude bomb of a two inch pipe with a fuse shattered several windows in the rear annex of the Anshal Emeth Temple in Peoria Illinois. No one was inside and there were no injuries. The blast occurred about 12 30 am and the temple leader called the damage very small. Rabbi Joseph Ginsberg noted strong community relations and said the bombing seemed unrelated to a forthcoming speech by Robert Briscoe at a local synagogue. The temple dates to 1898 with annex added in the 1920s.
