President Nixon secured organized labor cooperation to form the Pay Board and Price Commission for future wage and price increases. Eugene's first female police officer, Virginia Hunt, a blonde patrolwoman, arrested 23 year old Thomas Elton Phillips of Eugene in a downtown parking building. Phillips pleaded innocent to assault charges and was released on $200 bail after the booking by Officer Hunt.
Former U S Secretary of State Dean Acheson died at 78 at a Sandy Spring Maryland farm. He shaped postwar policy including NATO and Japan peace treaty and Korea strategy, resisting McCarthy era pressures. President Nixon and others paid tributes to his intellect and devotion to the country.
