Church Explosion Kills Five in Marietta Ohio

In Marietta Ohio a boiler room explosion at First Baptist Church killed five people in a Sunday school wing hour after services. Fourteen were injured as debris rained on 14 year old Diane Slaughter, a teacher and 10 classmates including ninth graders Ricky Morris Gary Holley and Carol Joy and high school sophomore Heather Dawson. The boiler was under the basement classroom, water hit 140 degrees before shut down. This followed a 32 life nursing home fire in the city 22 months earlier.

Local man charged over phony crime report

Erie County man Larry T Eck 34 of R D 2 Corry faced larceny by an employee and turning in a false criminal report charges after he reported an armed robbery at a gas station. Eck said a man in a car with New York plates robbed the Corry Car Wash on East Main Street and Eck handed over 170 dollars. He waived a hearing and posted 1300 dollars bond.

McKean County Couple Fatally Crushed In Crash

A McKean County couple Harold Small 34 and Janet 30 were killed when their car left Pa. 155 one mile north of Turtlepoint and struck a bridge abutment. Police said the single vehicle crash occurred in the early hours.

Allies Free North Viet Nam Lieutenant In Cambodia

The United States and South Vietnam freed a North Vietnamese lieutenant in Cambodia in a reciprocal move after the release of an American sergeant last week. The escapee was flown to a South Vietnamese base near Loc Ninh after landing in an area under enemy control. Sgt. Sexton Jr. said his captors did not explain his release, and Americans expect more prisoner swaps but have no guarantees. Fighting persisted around Krek and Fire Base Alpha as shelling eased. UF Drive Reaches 65 Percent Of Goal At Breakfast

The 1971 United Fund drive reached 58,999 to date, 65 percent of its 91,000 goal, after a report breakfast at the Corry Motor Inn with 30 workers present. Divisions such as Education and Government lead at 71 percent, with five divisions surpassing the overall rate. official efforts continue through Friday and into next week with a victory dinner planned.

Police and Eiie County Welfare Department probe a local incident where a 10 year old girl babysat four children, aged under 4, while the parents had gone to Pine Woods Inn. A stove fire started by a child smoking paper led to the blaze.

Car Hits Pump At Mountain Keystone Station

An odd accident at Mountain Keystone Service Station on East Main street at 4 p.m. yesterday caused $50 damage to a gas pump. Attendant George Patterson was injured by a door and taken to Corry Memorial Hospital for a checkup. Karen E. McClure backed toward the pump causing the impact. Patterson was treated and released, McClure’s car could not reach the hose.

Administration drafts plan to insure needy get lunch funds

The Nixon administration is drawing a plan to overhaul school lunch funding to limit benefits to needy students and curb misallocation. Asst. Secretary Richard E. Lyng discussed a phased rollout, with potential early next year enactment and tougher state controls to prevent richer pupils from absorbing meal costs. About 584,000 would have been excluded under a stricter rule, and total aid this year would reach roughly 750 million dollars, with 525 million for the needy.

Corry GI Earns Bronze Star Medal

Army Specialist Four Duane L. Edwards, son of Mr and Mrs Gerald L Edwards of 825 East Main Street, received the Bronze Star Medal near Long Binh Vietnam for meritorious service in operations against hostile forces. He served as an armorer with the 624th Supply and Service Company after enlisting in August 1969 and completing basic training at Fort Dix New Jersey.

Corry Man Held After Charged In NYS Robbery

A 29 year old Corry man, Victor VanTassel, is jailed in Mayville on second degree robbery charges after police say he stopped motorists on the Busti Sugar Grove road at gunpoint yesterday. A witness, Stephen Kindland, testified VanTassel claimed a gun but yielded only small change. No bond set.
