Amid ongoing deadlock in the soft coal field, labor and management clash over foreman union recognition while new stoppages shrink output. Textile workers resume after wage talks. Longshoremen and other unions sustain walkouts affecting ships and steel production, with Ohio Indiana and West Virginia seeing rising idle rates and Pittsburgh and New York harbor labor tensions continuing.
Washington Oct 11 War casualties decreased as the War Department reported totals: Army deaths 2,049, Navy deaths 1,470, with wounded and missing tallies also dropping. Weekly Army and Navy figures reflected fewer losses and rising prisoner counts as names were carefully updated.
Allied headquarters announced that American troops in the Pacific will be sent home at a rate of more than 200000 a month for six months, with a total of about 1260000 men back by end of March. Remaining forces include 400000 in occupation, and divisions in Japan Korea Philippines and Okinawa. The War Department has arranged ships to support the mass redeployment.

Roger Brown chair of the Memorial Hospital campaign organization says the executive group met last evening and authorized arranging services of Henry Candy, an experienced fund campaign director, to lead the local project if prior commitments permit. Candy’s prior Warren successes and investigations support his hire. If Candy is unavailable, an associate will come to coordinate with Brown’s group. Campaign launch planned before year end.
Sergeant Frank V. Spitman of the 6th Infantry 10th Division in the European Theater received the Bronze Star for heroism in combat in Germany on November 25, 1944. His mother, Mrs. Stella Spitman of R D 1 Corry, was notified with the citation. Spitman enlisted July 1943 and served over 15 months overseas, was wounded, and spent time in Army hospitals in England and the United States. he is now in a convalescent base hospital near New York City.
