A fog shrouded dawn crash south of Union City injured no one seriously when a northbound driver veered off and struck a parked GenTel telephone truck. William Christensen and Harold Tarbell were working on lines. Norman Peters briefly intervened as the car struck, Peters was checked at hospitals and released after X rays. Vehicle damage totaled about 550 for the car and 1900 for the truck. Continued on Page Two.
Westfield state police suspect arson in a $200,000 fire at the Green Brothers mill near Blackville. Detective David Carr reports some evidence of intentional ignition. Co owner Errol Green says wiring was recently inspected and the mill, serving builders within 150 miles, is insured for about one quarter of its value. Full operation may take six months. portable equipment will handle urgent orders. Fire alarm alerted crews from Ashville and Panama after Harold Pierce spotted flames before 2 am.
Charles Guadagno announces 15 WWI veterans have become charter members of the Corry Barracks of Veterans of World War I. He says there are about 150 eligible vets locally and the group aims to recruit the remaining 160. The unit seeks benefits through legislative action and will apply for a charter with VW national headquarters. The group plans a list of national activities and a meeting on October 30 at the VFW.
Dallas resident Shuddouth was reported en route to Salt Lake City after a hunting trip in Canada when the pilot in a crash near Salt Lake City was identified as Shelley. The report notes the accident involved a small aircraft and occurred during the journey.
A string of Corry area highway crashes produced no fatalities. Early Saturday a motorist hit a pole on Route 8 near Union City. a New York plate is being checked. Havana sources report the release of 1,113 Cuban prisoners from the April Bay of Pigs invasion appears imminent. A Cuban Families Committee negotiator says all seems well, with only minor formalities left before the men are freed and sent to the United States. Deputy coroner and Erie County official said James W. Glosser died of an apparent heart seizure. He had been in bed reading Saturday night and was found on the floor by a roommate Sunday morning in the European Hotel. Estimated time of death around 2 a.m. Sunday.
The Home Office said the body of Soviet spy Robert Sablen will be cremated Thursday in suburban Rulsup. Dr Sabley, 62, was being transported by ambulance to a New York hospital in September after swallowing a large dose of sleeping pills. He died September 1 of a brain hemorrhage while facing a life prison sentence in America.
