William McNair resigns as mayor of Pittsburgh effective immediately. Council President Cornelius Scully automatically becomes mayor after the resignation. The note was delivered to City Clerk Edward Schofield and McNair left the city building without comment.
Leprosy patients at San Lazaro Hospital staged an uprising claiming the right to liberty from confinement. They carved placards reading give us liberty or give us dead and marched to Malacanang Palace to petition President Quezon for discharge, saying their disease was not contagious. Riot squads arrived and a spokesman for the lepers stated their aim to secure release from the hospital.
Bert Hurst a 98 year old Detroit resident was killed in a two car crash on Plymouth and Schaefer Roads. Four others including Bert Rich 41 Mery Harding 81 William Harding 29 and John Moore 51 were injured. Rich is detained for investigation after Detroit dispatches said he had been drinking.
Governor Baris is expected to pass through Corry en route from Warren to Erie where he will address a large Democratic rally at Public Auditorium tomorrow evening. He will travel Ti-tonesta to Warren with a 3:30 address in Warren and likely stop in Corry late in the afternoon to meet supporters.
Superintendent of Schools Ralph S Dewey left for Harrisburg to attend the Education Congress. The session opens tomorrow with talks on funding public education and suggested school legislation. Dr Lester K Aue and Dr James E Edmonson will speak in evening sessions. the congress runs Thursday with a closing luncheon and remarks by John W Studebaker.
City Council met to approve bills and enabling legislation for current municipal options. The September treasurer's report showed a balance of 82222.87. A $11264 transfer from incidental funds and a $1800 sidewalk and crossing project were approved. No new information on Zalzneck Brothers damages. Stanley Nichols to assist in obtaining a full report. New York Yankees win their 11th World Series title by routing the New York Giants 13 to 5 in game six at Polo Grounds. Key hits include Powell homering, plus multiple RBIs from DiMaggio and Gehrig as pitching and fielding shape the decisive finale. Attendance 33,427.
