In Pittsburgh AP reports the United Steelworkers rejected the 83 day steel strike ending proposal as completely unsatisfactory. President David J McDonald indicated immediate resumption of negotiations and hoped for a session soon. A 170 member wage policy committee was to vote in the morning on whether to forward the board recommendation, amid talks of Taft Hartley action and possible emergency measures.
The IOOF Grand Masters Rally in Corry on October 17 expects about 800 visitors from Erie Warren and Crayford counties. Second and third degree conferrals by a Minpie Lodge team will be held at Corry Area High School with a banquet and procession of dignitaries.
A general alarm fire in the Broadhead Building at Harrison and Main in Jamestown caused extensive water and smoke damage to four stories. South Main Furniture and Pharmacy losses topped 45 000 and 50 000 respectively, with Luna packages and liquor stores also hit. Frank Kowalecki a 26 year old Teamsters Local 249 member pleaded self defense at a magistrate hearing after police charged him and Frank Farine 28 with beating truck driver Elmer Redinger 28 of Pittsburgh unconscious in Shaler Township. Redinger returned to work after a two week strike at American Heating plant. Kowalecki said the blackjack was used when Redinger reached for a brick following a quarrel. Redinger needed 16 stitches for a head wound.
Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sherman Minton, age 86, is off the critical list at St Edward's Hospital in New Albany Indiana. His condition is listed as fair after suffering a heart attack at home on September 30. He was once an administrative assistant to President Franklin D Roosevelt.
Harrisburg AP reports Republican budget conferee Edward Kessler says about 50 staffers, scattered in departments, work for the governor but are not listed in the office budget. He notes governor seeks $100,000 more for 1959-61 office operations, reflecting split views among the six conferees as they negotiate.
Storms drenched the Southwest and Midwest with continuous rain over the weekend. Ten deaths were tied to the weather including a fatal car crash in Michigan and widespread flooding in Oklahoma and Texas. Evacuations topped 7,000 as Arkansas River and Cottonwood Creek rose, while tornadoes damaged homes across North Central Texas and other areas.

A Spartansburg youth, 17, was injured when a pickup truck backed over him during a school paper drive on Route 77, six miles west of Spartansburg. Brive Fulmer and other volunteers helped. the accident halted until rescue at Corey Memorial Hospital. Proceeds from the paper drive fund the senior class trip to Washington next spring.
Airman Robert L. Greene of Howerton Va sustained a 15 stitch head wound after a bloody clash with Japanese in Tachikawa. An off limits ban was ordered on two streets near the Tachikawa Air Base club district as Japanese police detained four men. The Air Force said no punishment for airmen was planned.
Robert Davis of Wattsburg was walking on the west side of Route south of Wattsburg when he was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by Richard Horvath, 1% of Union City. He died from a fractured skull, neck injuries, and a broken hip. No charges were filed, per District Attorney Herbert Johnson Jr. State Police.
Private pilot Josh in overcast conditions was guided to safety by an American Airlines four engine airliner. Captain Walter Moran and crew heard Guy L. Stultz attempting radio contact while lost in a single engine Cessna 120 from Mansfield to Buffalo. The airliner returned to route and located Stultz 20 miles south of Albany at 5000 feet guiding him to Schenectady Port.
In Moscow the Soviet space team pushes a new 61 point satellite rocket toward the moon to photograph the far side. The unmanned station carries a camera intended to relay radio signals back to Earth as it curves around the moon and returns to orbit. An astronomer on Moscow radio declares the experiment aims to reveal what lies on the unseen face of the moon.

Reported in the North Side, Morris, a 65 year old, died after being struck by a vehicle while walking on Evergreen Road. Police identified the driver as Prante Stich, with the incident described as involuntary in nature and under investigation.
