MEADVILLE A 7 year old pilot and his teenage granddaughter escaped serious injury when their light craft crashed on takeoff from a private airstrip owned by the Spalding Co on Meadville s east side. Eva Astor of Corfu N Y said the plane destined for Ithaca N Y struggled to gain altitude after engine sputtered, then touched down short of the runway and slid onto a bunk covered field. Deborah Platter of Darian N Y and the pilot were taken to Meadville City Hospital but declined treatment. FAA officials planned to investigate today.

Two Erie men charged after firearms and drugs found

PHILADELPHIA AP Fred Dixon feared his wife Melinda would harm herself or their two children if urged to seek help. While in Korea, he left the family with relatives. On Saturday Melinda dressed the babies and hurled them from South Street Bridge into the Schuylkill River before leaping to her death. Their bodies were recovered by a fireboat and rescue crews found Melinda hours later. Debbie Dixon recalled Melinda as troubled and volatile, having threatened suicide and harming the children in the past. Fred later received custody by court, though his family says he did not remove the children to avoid provoking Melinda.
