Born September 13 1906 in Austin near Coudersport he moved with family to Buffalo then Jamestown where he graduated Jamestown High School in 1925. He attended Notre Dame Grove City College and Buffalo University class of 1934, later ran a Jamestown Eckerd store before opening his own North Center Avenue pharmacy.
