At Corry Area High School a halftime protest by seniors with a float and a coffin interrupted a Corry versus Franklin game. Athletic Director Lou Hanna ordered the group off the field, threatening to stop the game and forfeit to Franklin if they persisted.
Burglars broke into Vogt Pharmacy on Main Street Union City last night stealing about 300 in drugs and 300 in cash. State Police and Union City officers investigated via a second floor window entry with amphetamine capsules and Seconal targeted in the haul. Owner Wilfred Vogt doubted the window had been opened in years. Police speculated the break may link other union city store burglaries, with no leads yet. The report also covers a separate homecoming float incident at the gate involving the senior class and Civil Defense officers.
A grease fire at 410 Spring Street scorched Frank Chiricuzio and neighbor Andrew McKeta while trying to save the blaze. Chiricuzio suffered facial and hand burns. McKeta endured first and second degree burns to his left hand and wrist as firefighters and volunteers contained the flames. Loss estimated at 200 dollars. both men hospitalized for treatment. Pollution charges were filed against U S Steelee by Allegheny County Health Department for 24 violations.
Longshoremen walkouts shut down nearly all U S Atlantic and Pacific ports halting major ocean trade. Imports had been stockpiled for months while East Coast and Gulf coast disruptions threatened farm prices and global shipments. Officials warned economy impact would grow if East Coast talks fail but some ports remained open and alternative routes were discussed.
Two area youths died in a one car accident on Route 62 five miles southwest of Warren at 1 a.m. The driver William M. Elslnger, 19, of Youngsville RD 1 and passenger Robin M. Lord, 18, of Sugar Grove RD 1 were pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Elslager lost control, struck guardrails, and the car wrapped around a tree. Rescue crews spent three hours extricating the bodies. A second incident on Picidilli Hill left Anthony Macedone, 37, in Corry Memorial Hospital with minor injuries after his rear was struck by a car driven by Donald Vanderhoof, 17, of Corry. A 15 year old girl, Linda Fenno of 431 Second Avenue, was struck by a truck while crossing Marion Street with her cousin Robin along a diagonal. Linda was admitted to Corry Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition for observation. Robin escaped injury. Driver William M. Flick, 45, said he saw the girls crossing and struck Linda, who was knocked to the ground. Linda was treated by the Corry Ambulance Service.
Secretary of the Treasury Connally outlined a negotiable range for improving the balance of payments deficit, noting an $11 billion target as a possible settlement while maintaining a $13 billion goal with a $2 billion safety margin. Senator Proxmire warned new legislation may be needed to extend the wage-price freeze beyond November 13 to curb price rises.
