The Learned Blacksmith A Pioneer of Peace and Trade
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow noted 128 years ago tomorrow that Elihu Burritt the Learned Blacksmith linked frontier artisans to world peace. Burritt mastered ten languages and funded pamphlets urging a world league, promoting cheap international postage and cross border exchange to erode provincial hatreds. He died in 1879 while working at his forge, remembered as a villager who made all mankind his neighbor.
