Johnson Opens US Doors for Cuban Refugees at Statue of Liberty
President Johnson announced a new policy to admit Cuban refugees to the United States, signaling openness to those fleeing Castro's regime. He designated Miami as a temporary refuge hub while shifting to an immigration system that ends national-origin quotas. The plan prioritizes Cubans with U.S. relatives and political prisoners, with the Swiss government aiding refugee movement via Red Cross channels.
