Washington Oct 4 Senator Johnson JD Cole says he has authentic figures showing more than 3,500,000 men in the Army with over a year's service and enough trained manpower at home and overseas to meet needs this year and next. He dubbed the push for father deferment as unnecessary amid debate over draft policy and questioned the accuracy of the figures cited by another senator.

New tax proposals seek higher rates to fund postwar plan
The proposals, continued from page one, outline a plan to raise about $6.61 billion annually by increasing withholding on wages and salaries to as high as 90 percent. A $3.46 billion portion would go into a compulsory savings refund after the war. Exemptions for married couples fall from $1,200 to $1,100, singles stay $900, and dependents drop from $3,500 to $300. Corporate rates would leap from 40 to 80 percent.
New Revenue Measures Target Alcohol Tobacco and Goods
The plan proposes excises raising distilled spirits to 104 dollars per gallon and beer to 104 per barrel, cigars from 0 to 5 per thousand, tobacco at 18 to 34 cents a pound, and general levies on forms from 10 to 30 percent. Additional taxes apply to salt drinks, candy, gum, and transportation related charges with bills moving toward revenue goals. House Republicans advocate following Morgenthau and aim to place the measure on President Roosevelt’s desk by January 1.
