Morgen thau to push $10.6 billion tax rise plan

Washington Oct 4 Henry Morgenthau the administration’s chief tax official will unveil a plan to raise about 10.6 billion dollars in added taxes next year to fund the war and fight inflation. He is expected to seek sharp increases in personal and corporate income taxes and higher levies on insurance liquor beer tobacco paper gum and travel. The administration aims to finance the general revenue bill with this package as Congress begins work.

Wife prompts arrest of navy deserter in Erie

A wife’s phone report led Erie police to arrest James Henry Wright, a Navy deserter, at 221 Fleet Avenue near the Ritz Restaurant. Wright initially claimed honorable discharge but later admitted desertion from Norfolk on December 2, and said he had worked at Erie’s Aero Supply plant after leaving Norfolk. The man was held for Navy officers as authorities verify his status.

Witnesses reported the aircraft met at about 1,000 feet. one occupant jumped with a parachute but failed to open. The badly burned bodies of the other three were unreleased by authorities.
