Filibuster Over Natural Gas Deregulation Persists in Senate
Two liberal senators James Abourezk of South Dakota and Howard Metzenbaum of Ohio lead a filibuster to keep natural gas under federal controls. They claim within two votes of victory as Senate slows into a third week. Mondale would break a tie to back the Carter administration plan. Critics note a 50 to 44 vote in favor of deregulation last week, with a potential two-vote margin needed to reach a tie.
