Murder Charge Against Area Cop Killer
Dunkirk resident Leo J. Mleczko, in fair condition at Brooks Memorial Hospital, faces a first degree murder charge for the fatal shooting of Police Lt. Mark Elfman during a domestic disturbance. Autopsy cites a deer slug from a double barrel shotgun causing massive hemorrhage. Elfman, a 14 year veteran and father of eight, died after being shot in the abdomen. Police and patrolman exchanges occurred as officers attempted to subdue Mleczko who fired upon them after opening the door to the residence. The arrest warrant was executed in the hospital. Mleczko is under 24 hour guard. The case recalls a prior high profile murder trial in which Mleczko was acquitted in 1950 after multiple trials.

Erie Firemen Seek Supreme Court Ruling on Pension Plan
Erie firemen petitioned the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to compel Erie City Council to adopt an arbitration panel's pension and longevity pay recommendations or resolve the disputed points by other means. City Solicitor Weber argued the act leaves no duty on council to enact the measures and that pension decisions are within council's legislative control.
