PSU Chemist Develops Gun Powder Residue Test
STATE COLLEGE Pa AP The shot rings out police have no proof who fired until a PSU chemist Dr K K S Pillay and the state police perfected a film lift method to detect gun powder on hands. A liquid coats the hands then a peelable film reveals residues after neutron activation to identify presence and amount, helping determine which hand fired and who was present in the room. The method, smaller than a derringer kit, requires reactor analysis but offers fast on scene clues. Pillay notes limits due to reactor access and cites prior courtroom acceptance in New York.
