Oil City Man Mangled Under Train
A Lehigh Valley brakeman from Oil City fell under a moving car at Royseville yard while preparing to set a switch. His right foot was crushed and clothing torn as the train dragged him seven car lengths before stopping. He was hospitalized and listed in surprisingly good condition after surgery. Two Corry men, Charles B. Case and Forest Geiger, were commissioned as first lieutenants after Army officer training. Geiger, a private in active service, earned his commission through the camp process, while Case waited through a second camp before receiving his. Amateur burglars forced entry to the City Market on South Center Street but little was missing. Owner Wilcox said no losses yet. a large amount of metal was moved from the Mack room. Entry was by a rear window. Later the confectionery shop of T A Payer on West Min Street was entered but the storeroom was blocked by a heavy door. Only damage was a broken lock at the rear entrance.

A German submarine was sunk by an American flotilla in a surface engagement.
