Question Suspect In Rape Here

City police held a suspect early today in connection with a brutal rape of a local woman Saturday evening. Police Chief Kenneth Nichols said the man is in custody after being picked up in Erie. He is an out-of-towner transient with background traits linking him to the case, but no hard evidence confirms his guilt. State police crime lab will aid identification. A counselor from the Erie Rape Crisis Center assisted the victim, who remains hospitalized in Corry Memorial Hospital in satisfactory condition at last report.

Infant throws infant into icy Ashtabula River

A 22-year-old Ashtabula man Ronald Crawford hurled his 11 month old daughter Cassie Marie Crawford into the near freezing 37 degree Ashtabula River near the A&B Company dock. Coast Guardsman Keith Roberts rescued the child, who remained in guarded condition at Ashtabula General Hospital. Crawford is jailed on $10,000 bail facing attempted aggravated murder charges. The motive remains unclear as police and dock workers recounted a frantic rescue effort using cars and railroad engines to block his escape.

Corry City Council approves one mill tax cut in 1978 budget

City Council with Finance Director Benjamin Calderone votes for a one mill property tax reduction for 1978, funded by a budget surplus of over 90,000. Concorde Launches Regular Europe to New York Flights

Concorde SST jets from France and Britain landed at Kennedy Airport marking regular service on the Europe to New York run. Each carried 100 passengers with crews of nine, flying 1,340 mph over 3500 miles. Protests by SST opponents were small. fares were 793 dollars one way. Air France plans daily Kennedy service. British Airways aims for daily flights by January. Noise rules set by Port Authority in 1985 will apply to Concorde and other jets.

Blizzard Drops Eight Inches of Snow Across Regions

A major winter storm dumped up to eight inches of snow in southern Idaho and southwestern Wyoming with heavier accumulations of 18 inches in a record blizzard over the weekend. Utah faced 100 mph winds and road closures, while advisories extended to Oregon, northern California mountains, northern Nevada and northwestern Utah. Montana saw temperatures around 13 degrees below zero as drought relief arrived in Marin County with up to 60 inches of rain, though more storms were needed to end the drought. The system also kicked up gale and flooding concerns along the Great Lakes and eastern shorelines, with widespread snow forecast for the central and northern plateaus and higher elevations in the west.

Hearings Held For Federal Funds Use In City

The other covered 212100 in federal revenue sharing funds for police and fire vehicles, Mead Park tennis courts, and major street paving. No public dissent was voiced.
