President elect Jimmy Carter toured Blair House across from the White House before an afternoon meeting with President Ford. James R. Warren, Ohio. Patrick N. Ranally 41 of Warren was identified as the pilot killed in a single engine plane crash near Springboro Saturday at about 7:15 pm. The body was identified by relatives from Mentor, Ohio. The crash occurred two miles east of Springboro. coroner Dr Wilbur Thomas said death came from loss of blood and multiple injuries. Wreckage was found Sunday morning after crews searched since the distress call. Ranally, employed by Keystone Refining Co in Warren, was solo flight practicing hours for a pilot license and was en route from Charlestown, West Virginia to Ene when trouble began. The plane left a 5-foot perimeter of wreckage with only four to five pine trees sheared off.
New York Mayor Abraham Beame rules out tax increases and heavier layoffs as the city faces a fiscal crisis after a court ruling blocks delaying $1 billion in bonds. He says lenders will not be stuck and cites talks with President-elect Carter and plans to involve state and federal officials.
A helicopter, police, Civil Defense unit, and bloodhounds aided a search for three boys who wandered from the South Hills Apartments. Richard McCray notified police around 4 pm and a hunter steering toward their parents guided the youths toward a road near Corry where the rescue concluded with the hunter's appearance and rapid response from units nearby.
Earl Dudman died after clinging to his overturned 20 foot boat for 23 hours in the Atlantic ten miles southeast of Gloucester. His son Peter Dustman and friend Whitey Haynes kept watch as waves washed over the hull. A Coast Guard helicopter found the capsized craft Sunday afternoon and the two survivors were hospitalized in Boston in good condition.
