Gibbs' Appeal Denied By Court

Philadelphia November 20 The State Supreme Court upheld the death sentence of Liter Edward Gibbs for the first degree murder of a Franklin and Marshall College stenographer killed last January The court denied Gibbs a new trial and affirmed the extreme penalty as justified by the evidence and jury verdict.

Mead Park Group to Hold Annual Meeting

The Mead Park Association will hold its annual meeting tomorrow at 8 pm in the Municipal Building. Three new directors will be elected for three year terms. Walter Sweet Harley Johnson and Mrs Leslie Wells term expirations are noted. Caretaker Ore Stennett will present park activities and Harley Johnson will deliver the treasurer’s report. Fire Breaks Out in 400-Ton Coal Pile at Aero Plant

A 400 ton coal stockpile at the Aero plant smoldered today as a second large coal fire in recent months affected nearby operations. Crews used a small and a larger mechanical shovel to move coal, cutting a hole in the concrete wall to access the pile. Fire began after wall access and continued through the night, with coal believed recently piled and damp from rains contributing to spontaneous heating risks.

Corn Picker and Car in Smashup on Route 74

At 5:40 p m last evening on Route 74 four miles east of Wattsboro a car driven by Bruce Lindsey 18 of New Jersey collided with a corn picker hauled by Charles Bush 47 of Wattsburg R D 2 The damage totaled 1050 to the car and farm equipment with the tractor sustaining 150 and no arrests were reported.

Three sailors bound for the Philadelphia Naval Base drove a new convertible on the extended Pennsylvania Turnpike from Irwin near Pittsburgh to Valley Forge Carlisle and arrived within two hours thirty minutes for an average speed near 68 miles an hour.

Phone Workers Return To Jobs Across Nation

More than 39,000 phone employees nationwide returned to work after compromise settlements ending a pay and combat dispute with Bell System units. Assault Report Involving Bates Case Remains Open

State Police report a possible assault and battery case but have not located the victim to determine charges. At 9 20 p m Saturday Miss Miles of Spring Creek reported Robert Bates of Corry was dragged from a car by Stanley Grimes of Corry and Kenneth Roberts of Columbus. Bates had been recently married to Grimes sister, who is missing, and the dispute arose as officers said they will pursue the case once Bates is found or a warrant is issued.

Gas Explosion Disrupts Beaver County Home

A gas explosion tore into a five room two story house in West Bridgewater Beaver County injuring the middle aged owners Mr and Mrs Fred Koble. Both were hospitalized in New Brighton Hospital in shock though not seriously hurt. Police say the blast originated in the cellar likely from a gas leak near the hot water heater damaging a wall and blowing out one side of the house.

Substitute tax plan defeated in Washington session

November 20 report from Washington shows the Ways and Means Committee rejected a Republican substitute to the administration excess profits tax plan. Rep Reed of New York proposed a 12 percent rate on normal income and 24 percent on excess income over $25, with 18 percent on other measures, while NAM opposed excess profits taxation as unworkable and inflationary.
