Harrisburg AP A compromise bill would raise maximum weekly unemployment benefits from 35 to 38 dollars starting January 1 and to 40 by July 1 with a possible 42 by Jan 1, 1962. Employers pay payroll taxes 0.7 to 3 percent as the fund is rebuilt to 300 million. Final vote expected soon after Thanksgiving recess.
The United Steelworkers Union rejected a new contract proposal from the steel industry on Nov 15 after secret bargaining sessions. The industry estimated the offer would cost about 80 cents per hour over three years, with two wage increases and continued recent cost-of-living adjustments. The union blasted the proposal as a repeat of old gains being eroded and criticized arbitration terms and job protections.
Sheriff says the 12 year old girl found near a footpath was killed after forming a sex club with teenage boys. Seven unnamed youths were questioned as investigators probe a possible motive while authorities report she received money for sexual experiences. Franklin jurors convict 81 year old William Calvin Bell of second degree murder in the stabbing death of Edith Lorena Bell in Barkeyville. The verdict followed about four hours of deliberation after a taped confession was played. Bell faces a 10 to 20 year sentence if sentenced today or at the next term.
Fred Thomas former Sharon mayor and state senator died in his office from carbon monoxide poisoning along with his step daughter Mary Davies 48 and husband Carl Davies 48 who were found unconscious later. Police blamed a clogged flue and said the three were in the engineering office when the gas filled the room. Thomas served as mayor in 1982 before becoming a state senator and later worked as a civil engineer.
Corry Memorial Hospital directors voted to spend 14000 for new x-ray equipment to replace outdated gear. They noted a 7000 county receipt and reviewed last month’s patient report: 278 patients, 1273 days of care in October, 28 births and one death, with 15 major and 55 minor operations. Rev Patrick J Carroll CBG Bt, former Notre Dame vicepresident serving 1926 to 1928, and longtime editor of Ave Maria from 1934 to 1952, died yesterday in South Bend Indiana.
A one year old Corry driver, Everett L. Miller, escaped with minor injuries when his car slid about 45 feet on Mead avenue and struck the thirteenth car of a stopped Pennsylvania freight train at the Rogers Steel spur crossing. He was treated at Corry Memorial Hospital for abrasions and contusions. The crossing signals, located south of the crossing, did not deter the impact. The train crew, engineer R A Anderson and conductor P R Fox, prepared to uncouple when the collision occurred.
City treasurer Carlton Smith said the final phase of collection is near as about six delinquent tax accounts may trigger court action. He cited a general fund balance of $6,806 as of October 31 and outlined expected disbursements through January 1.

In Walworth Ontario John Mebane a firefighter freed a two year old Kenneth Greene by gnawing through a stuck plastic harness to rescue him from a crib. He carried the child to a window where neighbors lowered him to safety.
