Berlin dispatch reports the Western Big Three brace for a crisis as East German control of Allied supply lines in West Berlin looms. Allies may refuse or partially accept new East German checkpoints while considering possible airlift options to sustain 10,000 troops and officials if needed.
October paid parking tickets rose to 277 from 182 in August, with five arrests on assault and drunkenness charges. Larceny under 50 dollars totaled four, two solved, one under investigation, one unfounded. Malicious mischief rose with four cases, two solved, two under investigation. In a London to New York clash a Pan American Boeing 707 beat a British de Havilland Comet 4 by 11 minutes. The Pan Am jet left 26 minutes after the British craft and completed the Atlantic in 7 hours 27 minutes, while both stopped at Gander en route. The Comet arrived 15 minutes ahead of schedule but the Boeing finished 34 minutes late.
Augusta Georgia police and officers hunted a man after a liquor store holdup. Jank Wall, 34, a veteran officer, died in hospital after being shot five times.
In Jerusalem AP reports the wife of Britain's air attache to Israel was found shot to death near the Syrian border. The 47 year old unnamed woman was discovered 150 yards from the frontier, with the stabbing described as severe. UN truce teams opened an investigation.
Hollywood AP reports Tyrone Power will be buried near Rudolph Valentino’s crypt, but his 70-year-old ill mother will not be told of his death. A maid cited the family restraint saying the news would kill her. Power died Saturday of a heart attack on a Spain movie location. He had visited his mother in Hollywood and sent cards regularly.
A 13 year old boy, Jerry Pacek, confessed to beating 52 year old Mrs Lilian Stevick to death with a lead pipe after an assault in Brackenridge PA. He led police to the semiconscious victim behind a hedge then dragged her and continued the attack before seeking help. The victim died in Allegheny Valley Hospital. James Bauman, 22, was questioned and held on parole and burglary matters. Pacek described meeting Stevick after she alighted from a bus and then fled the scene, later returning with help. Pacek is described as small in frame yet mature, with a receding hairline and mustache.
Washington marked the 25 year milestone of U S Soviet relations with little ceremony. Since the 1917 revolution the issue of recognition sparked controversy, and the 1933 exchange of letters between Roosevelt and Litvinov promising non interference failed to deliver broad cooperation.
