GOP Leaders Speak Out On Viet War Surtax Life
Washington AP reports Rep John Byrnes of Wisconsin says the 10 percent personal income surtax will endure unless Vietnam War spending is cut. He adds abolition or halving could come only if the war ends in three months. Richard Nixon campaigned that the surtax was a war tax and should not outlive June 30. Wilbur Mills counters against any near term cutback, warning of domestic demand and deficits. Byrnes notes potential elimination only if replacement revenue exists, with the war’s budget outlook in March or April.
