Fire Destroys Greek Freight Ship Carrying Explosives

A Greek freighter Captain George loaded with 400 tons of commercial explosives caught fire and exploded 300 miles northeast of Bermuda. All 25 crew members abandoned ship as 33 to 60 foot seas raged. The Virginia tanker stood by and another schooner Curlew faced rudder loss after the blast.

Polite Crooks Target Elderly Couple In Sugar Grove Burglary

Two men posing as electricians entered the home of Mr and Mrs David Locey near Sugar Grove and stole over 500 dollars saved over two years. The 80 and 85 year old couple were deceived during a roughly hourlong search before the thieves escaped. State Police seek the suspects described as young and courteous.

Plane wreckage found after missing flight near Elk County

AP reports wreckage of a small plane carrying four men was found about 15 miles south of Elk-Cameron County. All aboard are dead. The craft departed Ithaca New York Saturday night en route to Du Bois Jefferson County Airport. Pilot was William Lane with passengers William Mulken Eugene Hicks and Matthew Smith all from Du Bois area. They were returning from a Cornell Penn freshman football game.

Union City Board Backs Amended Act 561 For Separate District

Union City Area School Board favors amending Act 561 to allow Union City to stand as a separate district rather than merge with Corry. Trucker Kavanagh Dies in Carlisle Turnpike Crash

One person was killed and two others injured in a turnpike crash near Carlisle involving three tractor trailers. The victim was identified as Thomas Kavanagh, about 63, of Wexford, driver of one truck, pronounced dead at the scene.

Youth dies after Hatari stunt attempt in Ridgway

Wayne Jones, 16, Ridgway, died after being fatally wounded by a knife during a field stunt inspired by the movie Hatari.
