Women temperance head cites women as heavy drinkers
Chicago November 14 Emorgetic Mrs Ida Wise Smith, president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, surveyed gin and whiskey bottles and charged that women, once temperance champions, are now the nation's heaviest drinkers. She said 90 percent of inmates in institutions for the insane are married women and 77 percent are housewives. She blamed repeal and freedom after prohibition for women seeking equality with men and urged closing saloons as the solution.
