Bibert Howell, a farm hand for Allon Mead at Spring Greek, suffered a badly lacerated left hand while helping butcher a steer at the Mead farm. Ten stitches were needed and a tendon was severed. he received care from Dr. J C Kibner. Mercer in Darkness After Gasoline Trick Tops Pole Incident.
An Erie man Ellis B Benson, kin of Corry residents, is fatally burned in a gasoline explosion. The incident follows a series of notes on local projects including Columbus Lake dam construction and bids for Corys new Vocational School under PWA funding.
Willis B Benton aged 62 of Erie died in Hamot hospital from severe burns after pouring gasoline on embers of a heating stove at his West 11th street home. A nurse resident with the Bentons suffered burns while extinguishing flames. Benson’s wife aided her. she was uninjured. Mrs Downey and two daughters left for Erie. Funeral arrangements not yet set.
Corry High School football team members and staff, including Coach Russell Byler and Assistant Coach William Myers, were honored at a Kiwanis luncheon. Local merchants offered prizes and discounts to the squad as community leaders praised the season’s unexpected success.
Corry residents may enroll in the Civilian Conservation Corps program at the Municipal building as the Erie and Crawford county enrollment period is extended to November 16. Eligible youths include relief families with no school attendance and age seventeen or over. applications accepted through November 14 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. No Corry youths were listed among those sent to camps in the October enrollment.
London November 14. Hope fades for Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and co pilot T J Pethybridge missing in the Bay of Bengal during an England to Australia flight. Royal Air Force planes scanned the area and will resume search from Singapore with Capt P G Taylor and John Stannage sailing from Sydney to assist. The Australian government finances the effort.
Pittsburgh dispatch reports coal miners in District No. 5 of the United Mine Workers reject a separate labor party and pledge support to re elect President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1936. Thomas Kennedy, Keystone State lieutenant governor and UMWA secretary treasurer, notes the union will push political action nationwide to defeat 16 of 25 Senate incumbents up for election.
In Cairo on November 14 anti British unrest escalated as police clashed with students on Al Abbas Bridge over the Nile. One student was killed another wounded and a British officer was lightly injured amid the melee. British troops were not deployed.
Mr and Mrs Charles P Kerley and two children once of Corry narrowly escaped serious injuries when their car overturned after a guard rail collision near Mount Union. The family later learned of Hugh Kerley the father’s illness and planned to continue to Waterloo Town.
Official reports say 300 Ethiopians and 15 Waliar troops died in a battle on the Somali frontier with 63 Dubai troops wounded. The clash in the upper af valley saw Ethiopians abandon machine guns rifles and ammunition while Italy claimed victory.
New York November 4 Mayor LaGuard directed the bridge authority to have the contractor use American steel on the tri borough bridge project. He criticized awarding a federally funded contract to a foreign concern and warned that importing Hitlerland goods brings only hatred to the nation.
President Roosevelt issued a proclamation terminating the existing Philippine government and establishing a commonwealth with a constitutional form. He voiced U S blessing and predicted democratic rule on the islands, marking a step toward eventual full independence after one year of commonwealth status.
