Yarmouth Castle fire sinks ship with 88 missing near Nassau
A fierce blaze aboard the 5,002-ton Yarmouth Castle led to its sinking 110 miles east of Miami near Nassau Bahamas. Coast Guard and other vessels rescued 360 to 482 survivors from the 550 aboard. 88 remain unaccounted for as fire swept the vessel to the water line. Bahama Star and Finnpulp assisted in rescuing passengers and crew, with survivors transported to Nassau and Miami areas. The ship, built in 1927 and renamed Queen of Nassau later, faced swift destruction as rescue efforts continued.

Plane Crash Claims 41st Victim As Woman Dies
SALT LAKE CITY Utah AP United Air Lines Flight 227 crash landed short of a Salt Lake City runway and burned killing 41 aboard. Lt John J Sullivan survived the Oklahoma collision days earlier and described flames and a jumpy landing as the jet lost its main gear. The latest presumed fatality was identified as Mrs George T Wood though passenger lists did not include her name.

Inmate Stabs Prison Guard To Death At Western Penitentiary

Drunken driving sentences in Erie County court
Two local men were sentenced for drunken driving in Erie County court yesterday. Paul E. Smith, 98, of Bear Lake, fined 150 dollars and costs, 29 months probation, after a May crash on East Columbus Avenue where police said he crossed the center line and collided with a car driven by Thomas R. Thompson, 23, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Harold A. Mealy, 39, formerly of Tidioute, now at Phoenix Hotel, fined 100 dollars and costs, 23 months probation for a September 5 crash into a utility pole on West Washington Street after an alcohol blood test. John Gilmore, 136 Seneca Street, fined 100 dollars and 23 months probation for driving while suspended. picked up August 17 on East South Street.

Bad Driver Crashes Into Kids in Cleveland
