Hearings On KKK Rudely Jolted Get Red Light

Washington moves to curb civil rights violence collide with Justice Department action after a mixup in signals. The House Un-American Activities Committee halted planned questioning of Klansmen tied to the 1964 Lemuel Penn killing, delaying testimony of Athens Georgia area figures including J Howard Sims and Cecil Myers. The decision followed a weekend letter from Attorney General Katzenbach urging the committee not to pursue the Penn case at that time. Willis dismissed the witnesses until January 4 and recessed the hearing. The panel has gathered extensive testimony over 12 days, revealing Klansmen methods, finances, and violence schemes. The FCC study on misuse of citizens and radios is noted as a potential follow-on action.
