Trampled pilgrims die as train forces rush in India

Calcutta AP reports a train near the Bagmati River in Bihir state scattered hundreds of Hindu pilgrims on a bridge during the Partik Purnima bath ritual. Ten were trampled to death and about 40 injured as survivors attacked the engineer and conductor when the train halted. Both remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Nation's TV blackout silences airwaves across the Northeast

In a single instant the nations television and radio hubs faltered as power sagged at 5:16 p.m. EST causing WNBC-TV WCBS-TV and WABC to switch to auxiliary power or go off air. Breakers cut Corry off from the eastern blackout, isolating the city after a 20 minute voltage drop. Penelec manager Allen Kuhn said Corry avoided the widespread outage by opening circuit breakers and supplying power independently.
