Falls Asleep With Cigarette Girl Burns To Death

A 22 year old Miss Carol Castle burned to death in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill after apparently falling asleep while smoking a cigarette, touching off a blaze that consumed two rooms of her apartment. She was a laboratory technician at Presbyterian Hospital and shared the apartment with two other women. Detectives reported no other details and noted the fire occurred yesterday. A second brief item notes Hugh Rutledge, 77, who led failed attempts on Mount Everest in 1918 and 1926, died yesterday in London.

Snowstorm Closes In Across Western Pennsylvania

Snow flakes piled up to six inches in parts of western Pennsylvania as Corry residents faced a relentless storm. The Weather Bureau logged six inches at Torpedo, five in Ti tusville and four at Turtlepoint with additional accumulations elsewhere. Roadways were slick, causing at least five one car accidents as drivers struggled to adjust to icy conditions. Temperatures hovered near zero in Corry with a five day forecast predicting continued cold after a brief warm spell tomorrow and Saturday.

Democrats Flex Muscles Eyeing Further Conquests

California Fires Devour Hills Homes In Mass Blazes

Pennsylvanians Among Victims In Army Recruiting Crash

Thirty one Pennsylvanians are listed among the victims of a deadly Imperial Airlines Constellation crash near Richmond. The dead include four Bethlehem area men, five from Easton, two from Bangor and two from Navarre, plus others from Allentown and Wilkes Barre area. The plane was en route to basic training at Fort Jackson after taking on recruits at Wilkes-Barre Scranton airport. July Crash Leads to 200 Dollar Fine for Corry Man

Harold J Skinner 32 of 565 East Main Street was fined 200 dollars plus costs and ordered jailed until payment. He pled guilty to driving during a license suspension after his July crash on North Center Street where he rear ended John A Lloyd 53 of 601 Shady Avenue at a Washington Street intersection. Police found Skinner had no license and suspended privileges.

Eleven Navy Men Die As Bomber Crashes At Sea

A Neptune long range bomber from Brunswick Naval Air Station with eleven crew members aboard disappeared 100 miles off the Virginia Capes. The plane took off Tuesday for a 14 hour fuel mission and contact was lost shortly after. An ocean search by Navy and Coast Guard ships and planes recovered wreckage and two bottles. Lt. Cmdr. Phillip Calihan, 86, of Memphis, commanded the aircraft. The dead included Paul Hopden, 28, of Philadelphia, a POSC.
