Italy Likely Won’t Extradite Hijacker Over Death Penalty
In Rome, defense lawyer Nicola Lombardi says Italy will probably refuse to hand over 20 year old hijacker Raphael Minichiello to U.S. authorities due to the death penalty for air piracy. Lombardi notes Italy’s capital punishment ban and aims to have his client released pending trial in Italy where he faces up to 30 years. Minichiello is jailed on seven counts tied to last week’s Trans World Airlines hijack from California to Rome. Lombardi adds that Minichiello never formally renounced Italian citizenship, though he served in the U.S. Marines.
