Nab Two More Erieites In Area Crime Crackdown

Two Erie residents were arrested in a three state crackdown on an organized crime syndicate linked to gambling, auto theft, and racketeering. Isabel Zygowski and Walter Pacak of Erie owned a local press and were arraigned on gambling device charges with bail set at one dollar. Caesar Montevecchio and Michael Maggio, both of Brie, were held on multiple federal charges after mass arrests tied to interstate transport of gambling tickets and related crimes. The probe also covered pandering, armed robbery, passing stolen checks, prostitution, and a plan to murder a police informer identified as Charles Thomas. Montevecchio faced a $15,000 total bond. Maggio $4,000. Thomas survived a motel shooting in Avalon, Pennsylvania. Montevecchio later faced a Flint fugitive warrant for armed robbery and conspiracy to commit murder. The investigation spanned three states and involved FBI and state authorities. A separate note reports a Wakefield Massachusetts fire tower burned after five decades.

Engineers Strike Four RCA Plants in New Jersey

About 1,400 engineers and scientists walked out at RCA plants in Camden Moorestown Cherry Hill and Gibbsboro over a seniority and layoff issue. Some Teamsters and other unions backed the strikers as a joint union management study committee had been set to resolve the dispute. The company warned a prolonged walkout could disrupt production though immediate effects were minimal.
