California voters face a special election on Proposition 2 to repeal the year-old pension law. If approved, the measure would remove the pension law from the state constitution while preserving maximum grants and ending related eligibility rules. The campaign pits supporters of the plan against a repeal movement led by anti-pension advocates.

Restrictions on property ownership were liberalized, sheriffing pension costs to the state and elevating benefits. The law shifted pensions from counties to state control and gave the governor power to appoint a welfare director, drawing PTA groups to repeal. California recorded a 64.9 percent rise in monthly pension costs year over year, with 264,862 recipients in August, far above the national trend. In a separate note, Amnetta Allen, 52, was killed by an accidental shotgun discharge on a back porch in Sinnemahoning area, Altoona Hospital reports.
