Two Dixie States Vote On Poll Tax In Virginia Texas

Voters in Virginia and Texas decide the fate of poll tax laws. Virginia would abolish the $1.50 tax as a voting requirement while granting the legislature power to set new election qualifications and tax other purposes. Texas would discard the $1.75 tax as a voting condition but keep the tax itself. A national anti-poll tax bill, backed by President Truman, looms in Congress. Seven southern states still impose the tax, including Virginia and Texas. The Virginia proposal faces opposition from some, while Democratic leaders back repeal. Texas supporters warn of school-fund losses near $1 million yearly. opponents say few would pay the tax without the vote.
