Mercer County constable Heloel of Wheatland fought a gun battle Friday afternoon with three Italian chicken thieves. He wounded two suspects but they escaped. The constable received nominal damage from the incident.
Three men armed with shotguns attacked at Howele farm. The constable seized one man, others fled, a blow struck the constable's head, and a gunman fired wounding another. The officer fired back as the men fled, one dropped an arm as if wounded. A wagon arrived Saturday with a seriously injured or dead man. An investigation is being made.
