Judge Calls Rape Case 'Most Hideous'
Erie County Judge Lindley McClelland sentenced William Sharp, 33, of Erie to 7 1/2 to 19 years in state prison for the June 7, 1976 rape of a westside woman. Sharp climbed through a bedroom window and raped the woman at knifepoint while her husband slept nearby. The judge called the crime one of the most hideous and revolting he had encountered. County Trims $700000 From Child Agency Budget
Erie County Budget Director Joseph Schmitt cut about $700,000 from the $900,000 proposed 1978 raise for Children's Services, bringing the department to a $1 million request. He notes the county funds a $5.1 million program with roughly $4.1 million state aid. The plan reduces new employees from 34 to 14, shifts toward state reimbursable positions, drops a juvenile treatment center, and prefers a foster home approach for runaways with higher payments to operators. The budget remains tentative pending commission approval, with no real estate tax increase needed to balance about $20 million general fund and $5 million Mental Health program.
