Robot Explorer Mariner 3 On Pad Set For Mars Trip

Cape Kennedy Fla AP The United States prepared to launch Mariner 3 a robot explorer on an unmanned mission to Mars to take pictures and gather scientific data. An Atlas Agena D rocket was scheduled for liftoff between 1 22 pm and 4 19 pm to begin a flight about 350 million miles to a brief Mars encounter next July 17. If successful the craft would pass within 8 600 miles of Mars and return the first close up information about the planet. NASA says Mariner 3 will not detach life but will collect data to aid design of life seeking capsules for a 1969 Mars landing. Because Mars is favorably positioned for a launch only one month in 25 the agency planned two identical payloads for the current favorable period. Mariner 4 is being prepared on a nearby pad with a firing date possibly as soon as next week after early results from Mariner 3. Project manager Jack N James of JPL said there is better than a 50 percent chance of obtaining significant data from the twin shots. James noted each Mariner must function for nine months in space under radio command. (Continued on Page Eight)
