A Brazilian Airlines plane crashed on approach to Recife killing most aboard. Of 40 on board, 48 are reported dead with 8 of 6 prisoners and two of nine survivors. The flight was near its landing when it struck hill near the Revie airport. Two crewmen escaped: the purser and a stewardess. Witnesses noted no explosions before impact.
United Nations debates await approval of an India sponsored moratorium on nuclear testing. The United States opposes a blanket pact citing lack of controls while Soviet tests prompt calls for global restraint. Britain backs Western balance of power, Argentina and Uruguay urge regional voices to curb tests amid atmospheric risks.
Warren Willian L Mur dn, Pine Grove Township committeeman, was elected Warren County Democratic chairman by 56 to 23 over Frank Fago. Fago was ousted after engineering the firing of Worth Hammond from the State Highway Department amid alleged macing of department employees for Dem dinners. Eighty members present voted to declare the chair vacant, and the result will be sent to State Chairman Obis Morse in Harrisburg for record.
Paul K. Clymer, 56, dean of health education and director of athletics at Allen High School in Allentown, died at his home after a long career with the district dating back to 1956.
A Halloween parade tragedy in Dunkirk left 13 year old Robert Pulvino dead after he climbed aboard a trailer float to hitch a ride and became caught between dual wheels as the float slowed to turn. The White Eagle Band performed aboard the float. Police said the tractor-drawn float moved about 15 mph. a wrecker freed the body after removing a wheel. Over 4,000 spectators witnessed the event.
About 3,500 workers were idled at two Armstrong Cork plants in Lancaster due to a strike by Local 285 of the United Rubber Cork Linoleum and Plastics Workers Union over seniority. The walkout began at midnight following contract dispute talks.
A benefit program titled Gay Minutes Night, featuring the French Creek Valley chapter of SPEBSQSA, is set for tomorrow at Spartansburg High School gym at 8:15 PM. Proceeds will support the Lucy A. Morris Memorial Scholarship Fund with activities including barber shop singing, comedy routines, and sale of baked goods, ice cream, and candy during intermission and after. Proceeds aim to boost the fund from $5,000 toward a $10,000 target to aid graduate students at Spartansburg High School in memory of Lucy Morris.

He urged using large creative agencies and simple uncluttered print to draw buyers, noting ads are news and recalling wartime newspaper strike lessons.
