U S war planes hit Hon Nien Island 130 miles north of the 17th Parallel destroying an antiaircraft battery two buildings and a radar tower. Navy planes damaged bridges and barges 1600 miles south of Hanoi as Viet Cong attacks spread in Quang Tri and surrounding provinces.
The inter-American peace force in the Dominican Republic gains a Brazilian commander today while the United States maintains tactical control. Gen. Hugo Panasco Alvim becomes chief of about 21,000 U.S. troops with allied forces including 1,170 Brazilians and 21 Costa Ricans. Lt. Gen. Gov. John N. Dempsey signed a bill ordering fluoridation of water supplies in Connecticut communities of 20 000 or more population. It marks the first statewide action in the country to adopt fluoridation, aligning with a Public Health Council regulation already in force.
Corry State Troopers Paul Sita and Edward Pass nabbed five youths amid a string of cottage burglaries at Cottage Park. Police say 12 cottages were entered from March to May with brute force, causing $150 in damage and minor loot. Juvenile petitions were filed for ages 14 to 16.
Harry J. Kosela, 18, a non swimmer and Ambridge high school senior, drowned in the Ohio River at Harmony Two after joining companions who did not realize he could not swim. Beaver County coroner’s office reported the accident.
Police cited Robert L. Nichols for reckless driving after an May 14 incident near Wright and East Congress streets endangered two Wright School teachers and a group of children.
