State faces large tax needs to balance relief funding
The governor warns that without new taxes the state faces a cash shortage for the next fiscal year. He cites deficiencies totaling 10.62 million as well as 5 million in school subsidies and 23.083 million in transfers, plus 10 million for old age assistance and 1.597 million for blind pensions, with 35 million in debt service. The Senate finance committee weighs a 2 cent gasoline tax hike to cover relief and pension costs while postponing some debt repayments, and extra sessions are expected in 1936.
