Harrisburg reports on fiscal year cash shortage fears as the 1935 legislature nears final adjournment. The Senate and House move toward June 21 adjournment while Gov. Earle presses finance committee on tax bills meant to raise about 60 million for relief.
United Press reports Harrisburg May 28 that joint legislative committees investigating unemployment relief paused public hearings and began drafting a preliminary report for the General Assembly. Led by Rep. Miles Horst the panel heard county relief reports and rebuttals, with no more hearings until session ends.
Dan Brown of Corry was charged with passing three worthless checks totaling 18 dollars. He posted a 1500 dollar bond after a hearing before Alderman G J Gonlon. The checks were allegedly passed at Crawford Woods Lindsey's Drug Store and Hoh Keppel. Brown was arrested by Constable L R Brittany.
Tacoma May 28 United Press report says the fifth and final ransom deadline set by the Coast kidnappers for 200000 dollars has passed with nine year old George Philip Weyerhaeuser still in captivity. John Philip Weyerhaeuser and family have been unable to contact the abductors despite preparations to deliver the unmarked Federal Reserve notes. FBI agents and local police await clearance to act once the money is delivered.
WARRISBURG May 29 Proposals to liberalize Pennsylvania blue laws move forward with Sunday movies on the agenda for a final vote Tuesday. The bill would let each municipality vote in November on Sunday after 2 PM film showings, with five year irreversibility after a positive result. It also tightens theater worker rest requirements and raises fines from 50 to 100 dollars. The horse racing bill, heard by the Ways and Means committee, is expected for final consideration next week after two readings.
New York May 29 Joseph Leib Steimmetz apostate Jew was found guilty today of first degree manslaughter for killing his 1 year old bride Ruth whom he found with Rev Joseph Leonard a Catholic priest in a hotel room The verdict came as a compromise The state did not seek first degree murder nor pressed the second killing charge against the priest The jury deliberated 15 hours and returned at 2 05 am Steimmetz collapsed after the verdict and was held up by a guard

The Pittsburgh district receives 4,000,000 for river improvements including dredging, lock and dam construction on the Allegheny river. An additional 1,200,000 is allotted to raise the Timsworth dam on the Odin River.
Harrisburg May 24 The state senate confirmed Gay George H Earle s appointment of Dr Lester Kelly Ade as state superintendent of public instruction effective immediately The appointment to the 812 000 a year post was announced by Gay George Hall late yesterday at the end of Dr Role s term Born at Trout Run Pa 45 years ago he earned degrees from Bucknell University in 1821 and 1924 He taught and was principal in Williamsport 1910 1922 later led Muncy schools five years After a year as dean of West Chester State Teachers College he became principal of the Connecticut State Normal School New Haven in 1928

Press leaders presented a silver pitcher and telegrams from celebrities including Mae West, Ernest Lubitsch and Sally Rand. Tonight in Callander the doctor will be guest of honor at a birthday party marking his long career and the quints first birthday observed yesterday.
London May 2 Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald indicated in the House of Commons that Britain is prepared to join an international currency stabilization conference if some other nation takes the initiative. He stressed Britain would participate only if others take the lead in initiating talks.
Gen Hugh S Johnson, who helped draft and run the NRA, was named by President Roosevelt as a consultant to craft a new business regulation system. Johnson, who resigned command last fall, advocates a broad revival campaign to unite all business under a revamped approach.

Franklin Ps May 29 Eagar Thorp 64 a prominent local citizen and president of the Franklin Lumber Company died last night from pneumonia. He was longtime philanthropist and a trustee of the local hospital.
