Health Department says merger with Welfare delayed years
Harrisburg AP. Pennsylvania health secretary says merging the Health and Welfare Departments would take six to eight years and is not feasible now. Dr. J Finton Speller testifies before House and Senate appropriations committees amid 1971 72 budget reviews. Welfare seeks function reductions tied to a national health plan. Speller warns a small medical department would be overwhelmed if merged into a large social services agency. The Health Department requests an increase from 47 million to 57 million.

War End Lobby Sets Sights On 24 Senators In Indochina Cutoff
Washington AP Two lobbying groups target 24 senators to curb war funds in Indochina by year end. Top GOP leaders Hugh Scott and Robert Griffin oppose a similar move from last year and expect 30 votes again when the McGovern Hatfield amendment is raised. The list includes 18 who opposed last year and five freshmen who back Nixon policies plus Senator Clinton P Anderson who did not vote or state a position. The push, led by McGovern Hatfield, follows a June 4 scheduling vote on draft extensions and aims for the week of June 7 lobbying by two coalitions, the Committee for Peace and New Priorities and allied groups. The effort seeks to pressure open-to-change senators ahead of a likely June 14 vote.
