Jail Guards Reprimanded After May Escape at Erie Prison
Warden Alois Skonieczka told Erie County Prison Board two guards on duty during the May 14 rooftop gym escape were counseled and given a verbal reprimand. He outlined security upgrades and a policy to keep a guard with inmates at all times in the area. A repair crew left doors to stairwells open, prompting a new log for service and repair personnel. Kenneth Whittle, 19, and Fred Lucas, 40, both of Erie, fled. Whittle surrendered the next day, Lucas remains at large.
