Hope for release of hostages in Zaire stand remains
U S Ambassador Beverly Carter says there is hope for freeing two American students and a Dutch woman held by guerrillas in Zaire, despite Tanzania rejecting the demands of the Marxist group. The captors want $460,000, jail releases, rifles, cannons and ammunition, with a 60 day deadline. President Nyerere’s aide calls the demands blackmail and the government will not yield. The hostages are Carrie Jane Hunter 21, Kenneth Stephen Smith 22, Mike van Zinnick Bergman 24, and Barbara Smuts 24, taken May 19 at an animal research center near Lake Tanganyika. Stanford students were nearby.
