Indians Find a Stopper in Klippstein and Lugman
As the 1960 season opened Cleveland fans worried about pitching depth behind Bell Perry Hawkins and other young arms. By early May manager Joe Gordon had solved the pen issue with veteran Johnny Klippstein and fireballing Dick Lugman. Their arrival helped Cleveland to a first place perch and steadied the relief corps.

Klippstein Emerges as Top Relief Pitcher in Early Season
National Leagues top ERA earner Klippstein stands out as the most effective relief artist in the junior circuit. In eight outings he has allowed three hits and one run in 1 1/4 innings for a 6.63 ERA. He has struck out 10 and walked four, retiring the last 24 men faced. His near-perfect relief helped Cleveland win two key games against the White Sox, but the Tribe’s one run game struggles and contention with Chicago contributed to Cleveland’s pennant miss in 1959. If the pace continues, Indians relief depth may improve.

Lane's Secret Backing Helps Klippstein Come Through
Gordon notes Lane’s information network and clever purchases, including Klippstein who shifted from bullpen role to onfield relief for the Dodgers. Klippstein’s 1959 season showed strong late surge after back pains, aided by rest and hot baths per doctors. Lane believes the veteran will stay effective, offering control and experience as a top bullpen asset.
