A prominent Erie attorney was held in connection with an arson ring and hearings were scheduled for today. Six people are feared lost after a yacht accident, with rescue operations ongoing and authorities investigating the incident.
In Harrisburg the Pinchot administration recommitted the McClure Senate public service company code measure to the House committee for amendment and further consideration. A 108 to 85 vote favored returning the bill to committee. The House debated broader public utilities action as Turner seeks to remove the governors power in dismissing commissioners and apathy from the Pinchot group fueled talk the bill may fail. The measure aims to tighten control of utility securities and rate-case procedures, but the people’s counsel clause was struck. The minority report will be prepared by Turner and Bowers.
Vitel Kirkland, 20, of Gary, was sentenced to one to 10 years in the Pendleton reformatory for the death of his 18 year old sweetheart Arlene Drayes during a drinking party last November. Prosecutors say he assaulted and raped her. jurors believed differently.
