Malloy Faces Indy 500 After Bold Life Change
Jim Malloy quit a Denver $800 monthly job to race cars four years ago and now hopes to win the Indianapolis 500. The 36 year old driver will start inside the fourth row in the $1 million race after a lucky break when LeeRoy Yarbrough wrecked and Malloy briefly drove Dan Gurney’s No. 42 Eagle. He has finished 22nd and 11th in prior Indy starts and endured a last place finish last year after a wheel support failed. The field gathered for a practice round and a public car tour ahead of race day with driver changes and a ticketed tour for spectatorsBeginning with a late career shift, Malloy’s gamble reflects a broader story of risk and reward in racing.
