More than 600 servicemen fought in a three day outbreak at Travis Air Force Base California after a racial incident in a mess hall. A civilian fireman died and another was burned while a large force contained the melee. Authorities reported numerous injuries and 100-plus personnel detained as police from multiple agencies joined military police deployed in combat dress. The base commander sealed the base and investigated racial tensions among black and white airmen.
In Chattanooga Tennessee a Black man Leon Anderson twenty two was fatally hurt after throwing a brick at officers during a riot with sniper fire reported nearby National Guardsmen patrolled streets after days of disorder, curfews were enforced and arrests rose as the crisis expanded with fires and detentions.
Harrisburg AP Lt Governor Ernest P. Kline a Democrat cast the 24th vote to pass over a Republican bill requiring Health Department permits for gatherings over 3 000 lasting more than one day. The motion doomed the measure as it sat on the calendar for 10 days. House hearings on Gov Shapps 3 3 billion General Fund budget opened with involvement from Civil Defense Securities Military Affairs Tax Equalization Board and History Museum Commission. Tonight hearings include Insurance Department and Environmental Resources.
At an adjourned hearing the Corry Zoning Board approved a permit for Corry Transfer Company to build a 60 by 60 foot metal shop on Shady Avenue to repair trucks and trailers for Corry Foam Products. Protesters withdrew after the board outlined limits including a five foot fence and a direct Corry Foam access to reduce disturbances in the adjoining residential district. Taverns reopen Monday night in Kent’s troubled Neath Water Street area following five nights of disturbances.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear Amish schooling rights in a Wisconsin case challenging compulsory education beyond the eighth grade. Amish and Mennonite families, including those in Corry and Spartansburg areas, seek exemption from state high school attendance laws. The Wisconsin ruling and state appeal highlight a confrontation over faith based schooling versus public requirements.
ERIE The firing of two voter registration office workers tied to an unsuccessful commissioner candidate Shirley Colvin draws political fire on Republicans Fred Lamberton and Leo Weir. A third employee resigned in protest, while Democratic Commissioner William O Hill Jr harshly criticized the board’s approach as shallow and threatening.
President Nixon argues the House Black Caucus goals align with the administration citing programs for youth job creation and welfare reform. Caucus chairman Rep.
